Wisconsin Representative Paul Ryan on Thursday officially announced his bid for House Speaker. Should he win he would replace Ohio Representative John Boehner after his last day on October 30.

The 2012 vice presidential nominee had previously said he was not interested in the job. He declared his candidacy for speaker after two factions, the more moderate Tuesday Group and the conservative Republican Study Committee, endorsed him.

A majority of the members of the conservative Freedom Caucus also agreed to support Ryan.

One of the first things he would face as Speaker is trying to prevent a government shutdown in December like the one in October 2013.

If elected, the forty-five year old representative would be third in line for the presidency. He needs 218 votes to become the next House Speaker. Representative Boehner is retiring from Congress after thirty years in office.
