Republican Sen. Jeff Flake stirred controversy on Tuesday as he announced his retirement from the Senate. Flake’s departure from national politics follows months of heated back and forth with President Donald Trump.

Flake took to the Senate floor to make his speech where he took aim at the President and the Republican Party leadership. Flake declared he “will no longer be complicit or silent” and criticized President Trump’s “reckless, outrageous and undignified” behavior.

The junior Senator from Arizona went on to critique “the new normal,” and said, “we must never adjust to the present coarseness of our national dialogue, with the tone set at the top.”

Flake urged his Republican colleagues to take action from what he believes are the “worst impulses” of the Trump era. “It is often said that children are watching,” he stated. “Well, they are. And what are we going to do about that?”
