President Trump wants the man accused of a New York City terror attack sentenced to death. In the attack on Oct. 31 in New York, eight people were confirmed dead and dozens were injured. The suspect attacked by driving a truck down the bike lane.  The suspect is Uzbek immigrant, 29, Sayfullo Saipov.  Saipov was shot at scene by a police officer upon arrest.

According to Reuters, Saipov told investigators that this attack was inspired by watching Islamic State propaganda videos on his cellphone.  He also felt no regret for what he had done and felt good about the attack.  When Saipov was treated at Bellevue Hospital Center, he even asked to display the Islamic State flag in his room.

The President made his feelings about the Sayfullo Saipov well-known.  The president tweeted,“There is also something appropriate about keeping him in the home of the horrible crime he committed. Should move fast. DEATH PENALTY!”

Since the President tweeted before Saipov could even put in a plea, this could help the defendant’s case.  According to James Acker who is a criminal justice professor that specializes in capital punishment, by giving Saipov’s attorney to argue that the president’s tweet may have prejudiced potential jurors

The President also suggested that Saipov be sent to Guantanamo Bay military prison but realized the process would be too difficult. “Would love to send the NYC terrorist to Guantanamo but statistically that process takes much longer than going through the Federal system,” Trump said in a tweet.
