House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi refuses to criticize Representative John Conyers, recently accused of sexual harassment. Pelosi called the Michigan Democrat an “icon in our country,” citing the congressman’s support for the Violence Against Women Act.

Conyers faces a House Ethics Committee investigation over allegations that he sexually harassed and discriminated members of his staff. Pelosi called on the House Ethics Committee to investigate the allegations and placed responsibility on Conyers to “do the right thing.”

On Sunday afternoon, Conyers announced that he was stepping down as a member of the House Judiciary Committee during the investigation. The decision came after his attorneys told CNN that the congressman was not resigning.
