Massage Envy, a popular spa chain, faces allegations of sexual assault from over 180 women. The company has also mishandled the claims against their therapists.
Buzzfeed News first broke the story with their investigation of therapists groping and performing sexual acts to female clients. According to Buzzfeed News, more than 180 people “have filed sexual assault lawsuits, police reports, and state board complaints against Massage Envy spas, their employees, and the national company.”

Franchisees are only required to conduct internal investigations of abuse claims. The company’s policy on reporting sexual assault to local law enforcement only occurs in the few states that require notification.

Massage Envy is a billion dollar business and the largest in its class. The company promises trustworthy services at an affordable price. In a statement, Buzzfeed said, “We are constantly listening, learning and looking at how we can do more, including how we support franchised locations with best practices in handling these incidents and supporting their clients.”
Many victims are coming forward and taking action to ensure that spa companies do the right thing from now on, by reporting their experience to the police along with taking their cases to court. Federal legislation has been introduced to require massage spas to report sexual assault allegations to police.
