North Korea said Wednesday that it has successfully launched an intercontinental ballistic missile that is capable of reaching the United States. The weapon, called a Hwasong 15, was detected from a site near Pyongyang. This is North Korea’s first ballistic missile launch in 10 weeks.

Spokesman Col. Robert Manning reports that the launch did not pose a threat to “North American, our territories or our allies.” In this launch, the missile was fired at such a high angle, not threatening the United States. David Wright of the Union of Concerned Scientists calculated that if the missile had been fired on a standard trajectory it could have traveled far enough to reach Washington D.C.
The Trump Administration declared North Korea a state of sponsor terrorism last week and imposed new sanctions on the countries shipping firms and trade with China. President Trump addressed the launch saying “We will take care of it.”
