President Trump attacked a Democratic lawmaker on twitter who has called for his resignation following renewed allegations of sexual assault from multiple women. In a tweet posted Tuesday morning, President Trump wrote that Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York was a “lightweight” and would “do anything” for campaign contributions.

Senator Gillibrand, who was in a morning Bible study session when Trump tweeted his message, responded shortly after, saying: “You cannot silence me or the millions of women who have gotten off the sidelines to speak out about the unfitness and shame you have brought to the Oval Office.” Speaking at a news conference later in the day, Gillibrand called Trump’s online insult derogatory.

“I see it as a sexist smear. I mean that’s what it is,” Senator Gillibrand said. “It’s part of the President’s efforts of name calling and it’s not going to silence me.”

Trump’s words came after the senator told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour that the president should step down following multiple women reiterating their allegations of sexual assault and harassment; the women had originally launched them during last year’s presidential campaign. Trump dismissed those accusations on Tuesday, alleging the claims against him were an invention by Democrats.
