Bright, dramatic dresses are Michael De Paulo’s specialty and his latest collection certainly reflects that. De Paulo unveiled his new collection Thursday night at The Liberty Hotel as part of Boston Fashion Week. His new collection incorporates a variety of vibrant colors and luxurious fabrics such as satin and lace. According to the designer this particular line was inspired by Venice, Italy, which was reflected in the ruffles and elaborate beading incorporated in some of the gowns.
De Paulo achieved a Master’s in Architecture from Northeastern University, however instead of constructing homes, he began constructing gowns. His fashion label Michael De Paulo Couture, which features evening gowns, cocktail dresses and wedding gowns, has received rave reviews from critics and buyers since its inception in 2006.
Showcased in stores across the United States and in Toronto, a De Paulo gown starts at around $2000, however De Paulo did not seem worried about the economy affecting commercial appeal. When asked if the economic meltdown in America has had an impact on his high-end fashion he explained that although the economy has been an issue for him as a designer, the impact on sales was minimal.
The audience was eclectic, especially because entrance to the show was free. The crowd was a mix of people from the fashion community, students, fans of the designer and curious, unfamiliar locals. The high-energy show was certainly an elegant and trendy addition to this year’s Boston Fashion Week. Judging by the reaction of the crowd, this fashion show reaffirmed Michael De Paulo as one of Boston’s top designers.
