Maldives President To Host Underwater Meeting
By Andres Acosta –10/13/09
The nation of Maldives is having its next cabinet meeting underwater. That’s right — underwater. Maldives’ president, Mohamed Nasheed, wants to draw attention to the serious effects global warming could have in his country. Maldives is expected to be one of the first nations to disappear because of rising sea levels. Right now it averages about seven feet above sea level. The meeting will take place 20 feet underwater off the island of Girifushi, which is a mere 20-minute boat ride from the nation’s capital of Male. Nasheed has advised his cabinet members to familiarize themselves with underwater signs and take scuba lessons to prepare for this week’s meeting.
