Steve Boros earned his Tiger stripes. Today, the late Detroit third baseman was honored. He had played seven seasons with the club over the course of his career. In December, Boros died due to complications from multiple myeloma. Boros’ wife, Shar, and his former teammate Jake Wood, threw ceremonial first pitches before a moment of silence.
In the late fifties and early sixties, Boros manned third base during two separate stints with Detroit. He became the first Tiger to hit three home runs in a game. Twenty-one years later, he got his first taste of managing in the majors. The Athletics hired Boros, but let him go after an unsuccessful season. A few years later, he met the same fate with the Padres. In 1996, Boros returned to where his career began. He held multiple roles with the Tigers before leaving the organization seven years ago.
