This was one of the few times when being number one is not the best option. It turns out that number eight is a solid choice.
Dialed In drew eighth place in the post-position draw for the 137th running of the Kentucky Derby. Robert LaPenta is Dialed In’s owner and he cheered when he heard his horse’s placement and his favored 4-1 odds for winning. LaPenta believes the random drawings for post-position point out why a winning combination is needed.
“It points out what the Derby is all about. You need a little luck and a great horse to win this race. And, you know, if those two things don’t come together on that day…having the best horse and losing the race is not a great feeling,” said LaPenta.
Dialed In is a Kentucky-bred colt. His jockey is Julien Leparoux who has raced numerous times at Churchill Downs but has never won the Kentucky Derby.
