By Patrick Hutchinson — 12/1/11
The Jacksonville Jaguars have parted ways with longtime coach Jack Del Rio.
Del Rio has been on the sidelines for the Jags’ for nine seasons. He is leaving with a 69 and 73 record, only two playoff appearances, and never winning the AFC South.
Team owner Wayne Weaver decided to pull the trigger after the Jaguars had no shot of making the playoffs this season, accumulating only three wins after eleven games. Defensive coordinator Mel Tucker will take over coaching duties for the rest of the season, and has been told he will get a shot to interview for the full-time job. Del Rio is still owed $5.6 million for the last year on his contract.
Aside from Del Rio’s firing comes news of Weaver selling the team. Illinois businessman Shahid Khan has agreed to buy the Jaguars. Weaver has owned the team since they joined the league in 1993. The selling price is close to $800 million.
