Clint Eastwood brought an invisible President Barack Obama to closing night of the Republican National Convention.
The crowd inside the Tampa Bay Times Forum went wild as “mystery guest” Eastwood walked on stage to few lines of the theme song to Sergio Leone’s “The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly.”
ABC’s Tampa affiliate reported that the theme song itself gave away the mystery guest’s identity early Thursday when the conference band had begun practicing it while media were present. Still, Republican National Convention Press Secretary, Kyle Downey, kept everyone guessing. During a press conference call Thursday morning, he said if the RNC had revealed the mystery speaker’s name, then “it wouldn’t be a mystery.”
“Thank you very much,” said Eastwood, once the crowd quieted, “Thank you. Thank you very much. Save a little for Mitt.”
Eastwood proceeded to address the unseen president.
“So I’ve got Mr. Obama sitting here. And he’s — I was going to ask him a couple of questions.”
He asked the not-so-present president, “So, Mr. President, how do you handle promises that you have made when you were running for election, and how do you handle them?”
He continued to banter with the imaginary Obama, making the audience chuckle with banter like, “I am not going to shut up, it is my turn,” and “You’re crazy, you’re absolutely crazy. You’re getting as bad as Biden.”
The actual president quickly responded by tweeting, “This seat is taken” along with a picture himself in the presidential chair. https://twitter.com/BarackObama/status/241392153148915712/photo/1
Near the close of his remarks a crowd member requested Eastwood’s signature movie line.
At first he refused, then gave in.
“But OK. You want to make my day? All right. I started, you finish it. Go ahead.”
The audience took the cue.
“Make my day!”
