It was hats off to Matt Nieto… literally.

The junior forward scored a hat trick in Boston University’s 3-1 victory over the University of Vermont. Nieto has scored the last five goals for the Terriers.

“My teammates and line mates made it easy for me,” said Nieto. “They set me up for success where I just had to tap pucks into open nets.”

It was UVM’s Chris McCarthy who opened the game up with a goal near the end of the first period. But shortly after, a power play helped Nieto find the back of the net shortly…. And two times after that.

Goalie Sean Maguire pulled his fair share by stopping a career-high 49 pucks.

He said all night the Catamounts put the pressure on him.  They were desperately looking to take any shots they could.

“I was actually pretty surprised with a few that didn’t cross the line there. But my defense was playing well and I had a little luck I guess,” said Maguire.

The BU Terriers came into the game in sixth place in the Hockey East standings. A competitive division, however, meant the team was only two points out of first place.

A loss by Merrimack College meant the Terriers have advanced to fourth place.

The Terriers will go for a season sweep of the UVM Catamounts on Saturday. They will play the final two games of the season against Northeastern University.
