Peter Laviolette is out of a job.  And this is just three seasons after he led the Philadelphia Flyers to the Stanley Cup finals.

The 0-3 Flyers wasted little time showing Laviolette to the door. So he has become the earliest coach fired in a NHL season since 1972. Assistant coach Craig Berube has been promoted to interim head coach until Philadelphia finds a permanent replacement for Laviolette.

Despite the big-name signings of high-scoring forward Vincent Lacavelier and power play defenseman Mark Streit, the Flyers have only scored three goals through its first three games.

Last season the Flyers missed the playoffs, struggling to a 23-22 record. It sufered a lackluster offense coupled with ineffective play from goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov. It was the only season during Laviolette’s three-year tenure that the Flyers failed to make the playoffs.
