Things have gone from bad to worse for San Francisco 49ers
linebacker Aldon Smith.
Less than two weeks after checking into an in-patient substance abuse clinic, the legally troubled star has been formally charged with three felony counts of illegal possession of an assault weapon. The charges stem from an incident that occurred in Smith’s San Jose mansion on June 29, 2012.
Smith and former 49er Delanie Walker hosted a party at Smith’s San Jose, California mansion. When they wanted people to leave, guns were fired into the air from the balcony. Walker, who reportedly did not fire an assault weapon, is not being charged in the case.
In early 2012, Smith was arrested in Miami on suspicion of driving under the influence. In September, 2012, Smith was a passenger in a car which crashed into a deer in Santa Clara. Smith’s second DUI came last month. He was arrested for drunk driving and was cited for possession of marijuana.
It is unclear whether the standout pass rusher will see the field again for San Francisco this year. Last season Smith set a franchise record for sacks (19.5). He is currently on the non-injury reserve list while in rehab. He was seventh overall in the 2011 NFL Draft.
