Fear the beards.

The Red Sox are headed to the World series after defeating the Detroit Tigers 5-2 in Game 6 of the ALCS.

It was a season of unlikely scruffy heroes for Boston. Keeping with that tradition, there was a huge lift from an unlikely source tonight at Fenway Park. Shane Victorino came into the game batting a timid .125.  But in the 7th inning, he found himself up to bat with the bases loaded. The Sox trailed the Tigers by one run, and Victorino quickly fell behind in the count 0-2. Detroit reliever Jose Veras hung a curveball and Victorino swatted it over the Green Monster for a grand slam.

Pumping his fist as he jogged the bases, the beard known as “The Pineapple” lifted the Fenway Faithful into utter frenzy.

The Boston bullpen finished the job. Sox closer Koji Uhehara, ALCS MVP, finished the Tigers off with chants of “Koji, Koji” and “MVP”  ringing throughout the ballpark.

The Red Sox will host the St. Louis Cardinals for Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday.
