William B. Evans, a 31-year veteran of the Boston Police Department, was appointed Interim Police Commissioner on Friday. “The Boston Police Department will be in great hands under the leadership of Bill Evans,” Mayor Menino said, adding that Evans commands the respect of his officers and has strong capabilities in handling difficult situations.
Evans is known for capturing Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, a suspected Boston Marathon bombing terrorist, this past spring and diffusing the 70-day Occupy Boston event in Dewey Square two years ago.

Commissioner Evans joined the Boston Police Department in 1982 and rose through the ranks to become Captain of Area D-4. He recently became Superintendent of the Bureau of Field Services. Evans graduated from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government in 2008. He will serve as Interim Commissioner until the newly elected Mayor of Boston makes a permanent appointment in 2014.
