Landmark Reached For Gay Rights

Gay workplace rights may become federal law.

The Senate overwhelmingly passed a bill banning workplace discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender employees. The vote reflects the nation’s rapidly evolving attitude toward gay rights. Similar protection bills have been pushed for passage for nearly two decades now.

The measure faces a challenge in the House of Representatives though. Speaker of the House John Boehner and many other Republicans oppose it.

Gay rights advocates call the Senate passage a bipartisan victory. Ten Republicans crossed lines to join members of the Democratic caucus in supporting the bill.
