It’s official. The Boy Scouts of America is now allowing gay troop leaders.

The new policy takes effect immediately. The BSA’s National Executive Board passed it today on a 45-12 vote.

Church-sponsored units are excluded from this policy for religious reasons. The Mormon Church sponsors the most BSA troops in the country so it is protected. However, there is word that it might create its own organization.

The Human Rights Campaign continues to fight for the ban to be lifted for church-sponsored units. However, BSA officials say they will defend the right of religious units to exclude gay adult volunteers.

The Boy Scouts of America has experienced a steady membership decline over the past decades. Gay youths have been allowed in the BSA since 2013.
