Taylor Swift’s Unlikely New Friend

Six years after the 2009 VMAs and the infamous “Imma let you finish” fiasco, Taylor Swift has finally reconciled with fellow music sensation Kanye West.

In a recent interview for Vanity Fair, Swift reported that their mutual friend Jay-Z had a lot to do with the development of her and Kanye’s friendship. “It was important, for Jay-Z, for Kanye and I to get along,” says Swift.

Of course, Rome was not built in a day, and the “bad blood” between these two subdued after some time. “Kanye and I both reached a place where he would say really nice things about my music and what I’ve accomplished, and I could ask him how his kid’s doing.”  Respect was a major factor for the pop star as well. “I feel like I wasn’t ready to be friends with [West] until I felt like he had some sort of respect for me, and he wasn’t ready to be friends with me until he had some sort of respect for me—so it was the same issue, and we both reached the same place at the same time.”

This budding new friendship comes only a short time after Swift’s miscommunication with Nicki Minaj on Twitter. During the digital back and forth, Kanye’s wife Kim Kardashian tweeted a picture of herself sans-makeup with the caption “Imma let you finish but…”. Kardashian quickly deleted the photo and claimed that it was coincidental, however many people took it as a personal dig towards Swift.

Swift’s public announcement of her and Kanye’s friendship is being viewed as the first step to relieving some tension in the music community.
