The Bernie Sanders presidential campaign said it raised nearly $3 million through online fundraising in 24 hours after almost winning the Iowa caucus Monday night.

“It’s been our best day ever,” Sanders’ Communications Director Michael Briggs said of the fundraising success.

Sanders finished right behind Clinton after a long night of close numbers. Clinton had a .2 lead with 49.8% of votes to Sanders’ 49.6%. The slight loss did not discourage Bernie Sanders supporters.

Briggs said the $3 million was raised after Sanders gave his speech Monday night. Sanders thanked Iowa in his speech, and reflected on the success of his campaign while his supporters cheered. He declared the close race as being a “virtual tie” while Clinton declared it a victory in her speech, although a Democratic winner still had yet to be announced at the time.

Hours after Sanders’ speech, new and old supporters donated. Briggs also said that four in 10 people who gave to the cause had previously not contributed.

Sanders has been well known for fundraising outstanding amounts.

He raised $20 million in January alone, says his campaign.

The majority of the donations received are small increments which allow his supporters to make additional contributions. There is also a $2,700 maximum limit that only a small fraction of donors have actually hit.

Adding to the energy the Sanders campaign received monday night, Sanders has requested more debates with Clinton.

The Democratic National Committee and the two Democratic candidates agreed to hold 4 more debates after the Iowa caucuses.

The first, hosted by MSNBC, took place last Thursday night in New Hampshire. Details have yet to be determined for the rest.
