Assistant football coach at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School is being called a hero after saving the lives of students during the Parkland school shooting.

Aaron Feis died at the hands of the high school gunman on Wednesday after shielding students from the open fire. Feis also worked as a security guard for the school and graduated from the school himself. He was one of the 17 people killed during the shooting. His death was announced by the high school’s football team on Twitter Thursday morning.

Witnesses of the event say that Feis jumped in front of the bullets and shielded students from the gunshots. Julien Decoste, a student and one of the survivors of the shooting, told NBC News that Feis prevented two students from being shot by taking the bullets himself.

Feis’s sister Johanna Mahaffey said that the brave action was reflective of his kind and selfless personality. She found out about the event from another coach.
