Haley resigned directly to President Donald Trump on Tuesday morning. According to CNN, the resignation took national security Mike Bolton and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo by surprise.

In an interview with reporters, President Trump referred to Haley as “a friend,” and said that the administration will hate to lose her.

Haley was an opponent of the Trump campaign during the 2016 election, in which she endorsed Florida Sen. Marco Rubio for the nomination after she left the race. Since then, Haley has told reporters that she will campaign for the president in 2020, rather than run against him.

Haley said that there “is no personal reason,” for her departure, but rather that it is “very important,” for government officials to know when it’s time to step aside and let someone else take the lead.

President Trump will likely select Haley’s successor in the next 2-3 weeks. President Trump told reporters that a number of people would like to do Haley’s job, adding that the position is more “glamorous” now than it has been in previous years.
