Awful. That’s the word that most accurately portrays the Patriots’ performance in today’s 17-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Patriots had more penalties than points– 14 including 8 pre-snap infractions.

They went the final 53 minutes without scoring a touchdown. The defense failed to stop the Pittsburgh run despite James Connor being out. Backup Jaylen Samuels rushed for 142 yards on 19 carries.

Tom Brady struggled, throwing for 279 yards, one touchdown, and one bad interception in the red zone. Sony Michel couldn’t get anything going on the ground, rushing for a mere 59 yards. Duron Harmon was a stand out on defense intercepting Ben Roethlisberger twice on the day.

The Patriots fall to 9-5, putting them in an unfamiliar position. They sit in the third seed in the AFC and if that stands they would have to play on Wild Card Weekend. The Patriots haven’t played on Wild Card Weekend since 2009.
The Patriots will need to win out and hope the Texans lose one of their final two games to secure a first-round bye and avoid playing in the opening round of the playoffs.
