The Josh Gordon era in New England has come to a sad end.

The former All-Pro wide receiver announced that he will step away from football to focus on his mental health.

In the past, Gordon has said his use of banned substances was related to his mental health problems. Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported that Gordon is subject to suspension for a substance abuse violation. The suspension would be the fifth for Gordon in his career and fourth for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

Gordon joined the Patriots on September 17 along with a 7th round pick in exchange for the Patriots’ 5th round draft pick next year. Gordon showed flashes of his potential by drawing comparisons to his 2013 campaign when he leads the NFL in receiving yards. In 11 games with the Patriots, Gordon caught 40 passes for 720 yards and 3 touchdowns.
