Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard has announced in an interview that she will be running for president in 2020. In an interview with CNN’s Van Jones, Gabbard said she would make a formal announcement sometime next week.
Gabbard is an Iraq war veteran who serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee. She is also the first Hindu member of Congress. In the interview, Gabbard listed health care access, climate change, and prison reform as key issues to her platform.
Four years ago Gabbard serviced as vice-chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, and often clashed with then-chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz. She later resigned and became a vocal supporter of Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign.
Gabbard is the latest of Democrats expected to run for the 2020 nomination. It is believed that California Senator Kamala Harris will make a formal announcement on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Vice President Joe Biden is also in the final stages of consideration.
