For Andrew Benintendi, baseball and family are very important. Cherry Benintendi, Andrew’s great aunt, has been coming to see him play in Spring Training since he came up through the Boston Red Sox farm system. “He was in the minor leagues at one point and he came up from the minor leagues, and I look forward to all the other young men coming up,” she said.

“He told me before the game he would hit a home run for me and he did,” Cherry Benintendi said about the last time she watched her great nephew play in Spring Training. The two also have a pregame tradition in Florida. “I give him a great big hug and he gives me a great big hug,” she said, “because that’s what he does!”

The left fielder hit 16 home runs last season and will look to hit a few more for his great aunt this year. The Red Sox begin their regular season on March 28 against the Seattle Mariners.
