It was simply too much firepower. The Purdue Boilermakers defeated the Old Dominion Monarchs 61-48 in tonight’s nightcap in Hartford.

Purdue is the third seed in the South Regional and was led by Carsen Edwards in the game. Edwards scored 26 points albeit on a night he struggled going 7-23 from the field.

Old Dominion made a late run, but it proved to be too little too late. The Monarchs went on a 12-4 run late in the second half but never got closer than 9 points.

They were led by Ahmad Caver who had 17 points.  Monarchs guard BJ Stith was proud of his team saying “we weren’t going to fold on this stage.”

In the second NCAA round, Purdue will take on defending National Champions Villanova. The Wildcats beat St. Mary’s 61-57 in their opening round victory.

Purdue head coach Matt Painter anticipates a tough fight saying “they play very hard and don’t beat themselves.”

Tip-off is set for 8:40 p.m. tomorrow at the XL Center in Hartford.
