Gauff isn’t just too young to remember some of Williams’ Wimbledon victories, she wasn’t even born for two of them. Now she is only the second player to knock out Williams in the first round at Wimbledon.
Gauff honed her tennis game in South Florida just miles from where the Williams sisters trained. Gauff said seeing them on the court inspired her to play tennis.
“I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for her,” Gauff said. “I told her she was so inspiring and I’ve always wanted to tell her that but I’ve never had the guts to before.”
Williams complemented Gauff’s play after their match, saying that “the sky’s the limit” for her potential.
Gauff will take on Magdalena Rybarikova, who is 15 years her senior, in the second round.
The tennis Grad Slam era began in 1968.
