Boston Bruins Open Season with a Win over Dallas

10/16/2021 By Benjamin Aliber

It’s officially hockey season! The Boston Bruins have some hefty expectations this year after adding some exciting new pieces in Linus Ullmark, Nick Foligno, and Erik Haula, while also locking in Charlie McAvoy, Taylor Hall, and Mike Reilly to long term contracts. They did lose some longtime faces, as this was the first time in 15 years that Boston has started their season without David Krejci or Tuuka Rask.

The Bruins opened their 2021-2022 campaign with a 3-1 win against the Dallas Stars thanks to goals from Brad Marchand and Jake DeBrusk. Boston had a mighty strong first period, outshooting Dallas 17-5. One of those shots came 17:38 into the game, where Brad Marchand intercepted the puck on a beautiful read in the neutral zone, which led to a breakaway. He was tripped up on the play and awarded a penalty shot. The 5’9 speedster came in with pace, made Dallas goalie Braden Holtby drop down, which allowed him to snipe it past him on the left side, giving Boston a 1-0 lead.

The Bruins controlled play for much of the second period as well, but due to a mishap on a bad clearing attempt, Luke Glendening intercepted the puck in the middle and tied it up at 9:15 into the period.

In the third period, Jake DeBrusk, who is in for a make-or-break season, potted a goal that slid just under Holtby’s pads 4:43 into the third. The newly-constructed line of DeBrusk, Erik Haula, and Nick Foligno is looking to jumpstart the Bruins depth scoring, which has been a pressing need for the past couple of seasons. . Their chemistry seems to be working out early on, as they put up three shots and three points between them.

Brad Marchand would end up sealing the deal with an empty-net goal and giving Jeremy Swayman his first win of the year. Swayman has yet to be defeated at TD Garden. He stopped 27/28 shots and owns a .964 save percentage. Boston outshot Dallas 40 to 28 and went 0/3 on the powerplay.

The next game for the Bruins is Wednesday in an Eastern Conference showdown against the newly revamped Philadelphia Flyers squad. The puck drop is at 7:30.
