As the omicron variant has spread from South Africa to the rest of the globe, U.S. health officials voiced Sunday that all recent evidence points to the strain’s severity as less dangerous than the delta variant.

Chief Medical Advisor to the President of the United States, Anthony Fauci, told CNN’s “State of the Union” that “Thus far, it does not look like there’s a great degree of severity to it,” Fauci said. “But we have really got to be careful before we make any determinations that it is less severe or it really doesn’t cause any severe illness, comparable to delta.”
Health officials say that although there is still a lot unknown about the new variant, mitigation efforts and vaccinations remain effective.
