BOSTON– This summer, Celtics legend Bill Russel passed away at the age of 88. Not only one of the greatest players of all time, but drastically influential in growing the game along the lines of diversity, Russel pioneered countless Celtics teams over his 13-year career while capturing 11 NBA Championships.

On October 17, 2022, Boston released their ‘City Edition’ uniforms, which will serve as their third jerseys, or alternate uniforms, for the upcoming 2022-2023 season.

The uniforms will pay homage to Bill Russel in the following ways:

  1. His #6, which is now retired league-wide, are imprinted on the jersey and shorts.
  2. Slades Bar and Grill, an establishment once owned by Russel, is recognized in the font from the word “Celtics” inspired by the restaurant’s font.
  3. Along the sides of the uniform run eleven gold diamonds to remember his eleven championships.

Russel will have his legacy remembered throughout this upcoming season “through a variety of celebrations, including tribute games, dedicated uniform, and an on-court commemoration,” according to a Celtics press release

Boston is set to wear the City edition jerseys eleven times this season, including in their home opener against the Philadelphia 76rs on Tuesday, October 18, at 7 pm.
