The Red Sox’s performance is best described as underwhelming over the past four years. The team had its third last-place finish over four years this past season and needed to upgrade their roster for next year.

In comes Shohei Ohtani, the Angels superstar pitcher set to make an offseason move after an elbow surgery sent him out for the remainder of this MLB season. According to MLB executives, chatter around the league points to the Red Sox being the frontrunners in the Shohei Ohtani sweepstakes.

“Shohei Ohtani and the Red Sox are starting to be linked more and more,” Heyman wrote on Thursday in the New York Post. Although Ohtani is not expected to play during the 2024 MLB season as he recovers from a UCL injury, there is no doubt he will be a force to be reckoned with when he returns to the mound.

The 24-year-old pitcher/DH has completed a remarkable career thus far. He was on track to be in the running for MLB MVP before his UCL injury ended his season. He tallied 44 home runs in 135 games, leading the MLB this past season.

Ohtani’s connection to Boston is beyond the rumors surrounding his free agency. He also has a deal with New Balance, whose headquarters are based in Boston. The Red Sox are in dire need of a star player to lead the franchise, and one of the best sports cities in the world might just be enough incentive to get Shohei to come to Beantown.

In 2021, Ohtani had a historic MLB season, becoming the first player with 10+ home runs and 20+ stolen bases as a hitter. In addition, he tallied 100+ strikeouts.

Amongst other teams that have the possibility of landing Ohtani are the Cubs and Dodgers. Obviously, Ohtani’s current team in the Angels will certainly be a frontrunner to get the star pitcher to stay with the team in free agency.

After Mookie Betts was traded to the LA Dodgers, Red Sox fans are hoping they can get another star to lead their team to victory. Only time will tell if the rumors surrounding Ohtani’s free agency will land him in Boston.
