The new Netflix docuseries, “The Comeback: 2004 Boston Red Sox,” will reflect on the team’s 2004 postseason run, coming from a 3-0 losing streak, and earning them their first world title in 86 years.
As a part of the 20-year anniversary of this notorious Red Sox win, the series will be broken into three parts.
Howard Bryant, ESPN reporter turned filmmaker, said “It was obvious at that time that I was watching the most special baseball I’d ever seen” when reminiscing on the 2004 triumph.
Originally Bryant thought of writing a book series on the MLB team. Then in 2020, Brant turned his attention to writing a film series and wrote it with his business partner Melody Shafir.
Originally the series was supposed to be produced by Unrealistic Ideas, owned by Mark Wahlberg. However, the project was stalled because of creative differences that could not be resolved as the contract expired.
The project was then picked up by Meadowlark in 2021, who still hesitated to fully get behind the idea. This changed following Nick Davis developing a similar idea, following his successful documentary on the New York Mets.
Netflix picked up the story following MLB and Meadowlark’s pitch for the series in July of 2023. Interviews began in late 2023, edits were made in Feburary of 2024, and now the series will be released on October 23.
