Eversource gas customers in Massachusetts may see a considerable increase in their bills this winter. The energy company is seeking approval from the state Department of Public Utilities (DPU) for a 25% rate hike for its customers. This would mean that a typical $300 bill could rise to $375. Former Columbia Gas customers might see even steeper increases of up to 30%.

If approved, the new rates would take effect on Friday, Nov. 1.

In a statement to WBZ-TV, Eversource explained, “Our proposed rate adjustments reflect various factors, including the cost of natural gas, our substantial investments in safety and reliability projects, and the expansion of energy efficiency programs to help customers manage their energy use while supporting the Commonwealth’s greenhouse gas reduction goals,” explained Eversource in a statement to WBZ-TV.

This proposed adjustment comes as a surprise to consumer energy advocates. Larry Chretien of the Green Energy Consumers Alliance noted, “What I don’t understand is natural gas prices are down 14% year-over-year, so if anything I’d like to see my constituents actually see a savings,” state Sen. Barry Finegold told NBC10 Boston Tuesday.

For families struggling to cover heating costs, assistance is available. Eversource encourages customers facing financial difficulties to reach out for help, including access to flexible payment plans and programs like the Home Energy Assistance Program and the Good Neighbor Energy Fund.
