In honor of November being Hip-Hop History Month, this year’s inductees into the Berklee College of Music Hip-Hop Hall of Fame are hip-hop duo Kid ‘n Play. They performed at the induction and were one of three inductees.
Kid ‘n Play made many cultural impacts through their “custom-made fashion” and “positive lyrics over energetic beats.” Kid ‘n Play was originally under a different name of The Fresh Force Crew until they changed it in 1987.
The duo is made up of Christopher “Kid” Reid and Christopher “Play” Martin. Together they released three albums, singles, and films. Reid told WBZ-TV in an exclusive interview “the two decided to turn their friendship into an entry into the world of entertainment.”
Some of the duo’s singles are “Funhouse” and “Ain’t Gonna Hurt Nobody” which have charted to the top of Billboard. Besides films, Kid ‘n Play had a cartoon as well.
According to WBZ-TV, Reid is now doing stand-up comedy and Martin is an artist in residence partnering with HBCUs. Martin has also gone more into cinematography and documentaries. There is a podcast called “The Fun House with Kid ‘n Play” where fans can stay up to date on the duo.
As a message to students at Berklee, Reid and Martin shared words of encouragement. “Don’t quit,” said Martin.
“Enjoy the journey,” added Reid.
