Educators are continuing strikes in Gloucester, Beverly, and Marblehead. In Gloucester, a vigil was held to thank the parents for holding on while they strike.

The vigil was held at 4:30 outside the school before a school committee meeting that was set to start at 6. Dozens came in support of this action.

Including, Noame Graham, a Gloucester parent and event organizer, said, “The biggest stakeholders here are the families and recognizing the incredible sacrifices that they’ve been making to make it possible for us to fight for a better educational system for their kids.”

Superintendent Ben Lummis stated regarding the ongoing strike negotiations, “While we have seemingly made progress, unfortunately, it has not been enough.”

In response to the strikes, Gov. Maura Healey spoke, “I’m urging both parties to reach an agreement as soon as possible for the good of our kids, families, educators, and staff.”

Rev. Jim Bixby of Clifton Lutheran Church and one of the organizers of the vigil said, “Our schools have faced serious problems over the past several years, problems that can only be overcome by addressing the real issues represented by both sides — living wages and dignity at work do not need to be sacrificed for the sake of long-term financial stability.”

Today marks the 8th day of no school for Gloucester and Beverly students; and the 7th day for Marblehead students.

The educators and workers seek better wages and terms for parental leave within the districts.
