A big man got a big statue. Celtics legend Bill Russell watched a 6oo pound bronze statue of his likeness make its debut on Boston’s City Hall Plaza this past Friday.

Russell is known as one of basketball’s greats. A Hall of Famer and multiple All-Star, he played with the Celtics from 1956-1969. During this time, Russell’s dominating, defensive style helped drive home multiple championships for the Celtics.

Sports celebrities and local officials also paid tribute to the 11-time NBA Champion for his work off the court. Russell’s commitment to human and civil rights is widely respected. NBA Commissioner David Stern and former NBA players Charles Barkley, Bill Lanier and Bill Walton all came to pay tribute.
