Fans of ‘True Detective’ can finally relax now that the season two cast rumor mill is being put to an end.

After a premiere season with A-listers Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, HBO announced on Tuesday that the eight-episode returning season will be starring two big names so far: Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell.

According to the HBO press release, the storyline will focus on two new police officers and a career criminal, who are in the midst of investigating the aftermath of a conspiracy afflicted murder.

Vaughn has been cast as Frank Semyon, the career criminal who is on the verge of losing his empire when the murder of a business partner arises. Farrell will play a detective, Ray Volcoro, who is torn between his loyalty to a fraudulent police department and a mobster who runs him.
There is speculation that more big names, including The Notebook’s Rachel McAdams and Mad Men’s Elisabeth Moss, may be joining the cast as female leads.
Michael Lombardo, HBO programming president, suggested that the season two scripts are sure to be even more exciting than before. He also said that the network has never felt obligated to cast more A-listers, but that those who will be brought on for season two will most likely be more well-known actors.

Just like season one, season two will be written by creator Nic Pizzolatto, who is bringing aboard multiple directors after the departure of the first season’s Cary Fakunaga. Pizzolatto noted that the more directors on the show, the faster the pace of the production.

True Detective has a lot to live up to after the impressively enormous success of its opening season. A season premiere date has not yet been released, production for the upcoming season is set to begin later this fall.
