Referees in the Champions League are getting a hand from technology starting next season as UEFA has approved the use of instant replay, which will make its debut at the Super Cup.

The UEFA Executive Committee also approved the video assistant referee system, or VAR,  for the 2020 European Championship and 2020-21 Europa League.

The move will come 14 months after FIFA began using instant replay at the World Cup in Russia, bringing modern technology to two of soccer’s biggest championships. The VAR received mostly rave reviews during the World Cup.

To avoid overuse of the technology, instant replay will only be used during potential game-changing situations. These include goals, penalty kicks, red cards, and cases of mistaken identity.
