New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand announced in an interview with Stephen Colbert that she will be creating a exploratory committee to run for president in 2020. This announcement comes just days before the senator heads to Iowa.
“I am filing an exploratory committee for president of the United States tonight,” she said in an interview. Gillibrand outlined the main issues of her platform, including health care access, increased funding for public schools, and more opportunities for the middle class.
Gillibrand was elected to her second term in the Senate in 2018. She has been a fierce critic of President Donald Trump, and an outspoken supporter of the #MeToo movement.
The senator will join Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro, who have all announced their interest in joining the 2020 race. California Sen. Kamala Harris is expected to make an announcement on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
