Mel Kiper Mock Draft: Drake Maye to The Pats?

By Alexandria Evans

The only positive to come out of the Patriots’ dreadful performance in the 2023 regular season is a shiny third round pick in the upcoming NFL draft. Amid speculations about who the Pats may select, many experts have their eyes set on any of the standout QB prospects in this year’s draft.

Mel Kiper Jr., ESPN’s senior draft analyst, unveiled his annual first-round mock draft for the
2024 NFL draft, highlighting New England’s ability to capitalize on the quarterback talent
available in this year’s class.

For the New England Patriots number three pick, Kiper had them addressing a shaky QB room
with the potential addition of UNC’s Drake Maye. Rumors surrounding the Patriots selecting a
new quarterback with their comfortably high draft pick have swirled since the latter half of the
regular season. After Mac Jones’ abysmal performance this past season, it only makes sense that Robert Kraft and the Pats front office are keen on prioritizing their quarterback room.

The former ACC Player of the Year can be a compelling fit for the Patriots. The redshirt
sophomore started two seasons with the Tar Heels, producing solid results. Maye completed 63% of his passes while throwing for just over 3,600 yards. The 6’4 230lb QB is often praised for his pocket presence and ability to step up and deliver timely throws in the pocket, while also having incredible mobility comparable to the likes of Joe Burrow and Dak Prescott. While Maye could strongly improve the Patriots offense, a quarterback isn’t their only problem.

Despite the fact that Mac Jones didn’t play well himself, he wasn’t truly set up to succeed, as he was surrounded by a lackluster offensive line and no viable weapons for the passing game. Thishas also highlighted a scenario in which New England aims for a tight end or receiver, morespecifically, Ohio State standout, Marvin Harrison Jr. Bringing Harrison Jr. on board could alsoopen the door for the Pats to consider exploring the veteran quarterbacks on the market.

Either way, the Patriots have a number of decisions to make regarding their uninspiring offense. Whether they go with Drake Maye, or another top prospect, it is vital that they take advantage of such a high pick.
