In a Facebook post April 1, James Eldridge, Massachusetts state senator for the Middlesex and Worcester district, announced that he would buy Colonial Candies, a beloved candy shop for sale in Bolton.

“…when I saw the For Sale sign below the big candy store lettering on Route 495, I just had to take action,” Eldridge posted. “So it is with great pride that I have joined several local investors to buy Colonial Candies!”

The next day, Eldridge followed up by sharing, “I WISH I could buy the former Hebert Candies shop that I’ve gone to as a kid, but I hope someone does keep it open! My dry sense of humor apparently convinced some people this was real!”

Users in the comment section of Eldrige’s post were not pleased, Boston.com reported. “Not very amusing to joke about keeping a beloved local business alive, in my opinion,” someone commented.

Eldridge wasn’t the only Massachusetts politician to participate in April Fools’.

Julia Mejia, a Boston city councilor, announced she would run for Suffolk Supreme Judicial Court. She revealed it was a joke the next day.
