Strong onshore winds are bringing late-day showers to Boston this week, driven by a northern pressure system. Rain is expected from Wednesday afternoon into Thursday morning, accompanying cloud cover, low temperatures in the mid 50s and highs in the upper 60s.

Residents of Boston have this high-pressure storm system to thank, however, for keeping the developing Hurricane Helene at bay.

The hurricane is expected to be a “very strong” Category 3. Hurricane Helene is forming in the Gulf of Mexico about 150 miles west of Grand Cayman. The storm surge from Helene will push water from the Gulf and intense rain into Atlanta, Nashville, and Lexington, Kentucky, sparking fears of inland flooding.

Hurricane, storm surge, and flood warnings have already been issued along the west coast of Florida in anticipation of landfall on Thursday. Florida’s Big Bend region is bracing for surge inundation up to 10 feet high, a potential record for the area.
