Abortion rates dramatically increase in Massachusetts

By Emily Champagne
In 2023, there was a significant increase in abortions performed in Massachusetts, according to a statistic driven by out-of-state patients that received care through telehealth options.
During the first full year without the protections of Roe v. Wade, Massachusetts health care providers performed 24,355 abortions, which is a 37 percent rise since 2022.
When it came to Massachusetts residents specifically, the number saw just a marginal increase, going from 16,472 to 17,936.
Instead, the substantial surge came from out-of-staters. Back in 2022, there were only 920 patients recorded using services, but now the number sits at nearly 6,115. This number increased more than seven times, as California and Virginia residents started traveling to Massachusetts.
Over the years, state leaders have pushed to make Massachusetts a safe haven for abortion rights. Maura Healey, the state’s Governor, even signed an executive order earlier this year in order to protect emergency abortion care. Healey has also taken steps to stockpile mifepristone, the progesterone blocker used in procedures.
This order however came before Trump’s successful reelection campaign, one filled with promises to not enact a federal abortion ban. However, his party, which shares opposing viewpoints, could implement further restrictions.
Many hope that with the incoming second term of Trump’s presidency that Massachusetts can continue to be a guarded space for patients and for the safety and health of all residents.
