What’s next for the Red Sox after losing Juan Soto?

Juan Soto has signed with the New York Mets, accepting a 10 year, $765 million contract. This marks the largest contract in professional sports history. The Red Sox offered Soto a 15 year, $700 million contract, according to MassLive’s Sean McAdam.

Soto is an impressive outfielder, but is arguably the best hitter in baseball as well. Sam Kennedy, Boston Red Sox president, was aiming to strengthen his roster that missed five of the last six playoffs.

“I think the one thing we want to avoid is putting ourselves in a position where the success of our offseason hinges on a single transaction,” Chief Baseball Officer of the Red Sox, Craig Breslow, told McAdam. “Because there’s just too much uncertainty around any of that. We have to constantly think about, ‘OK, this is Plan A, but if that falls through, what does Plan B look like and what does Plan C look like?’”

The Red Sox has reportedly met with two free-agent pitchers, Corbin Burnes and Max Fried. Boston could sign a No. 1 starter, or they could go with a younger, cost-controlled player like Triston Casas or Wilyer Abreu. But, the Red Sox also need to look out for talent in a right-handed batter.

Stay tuned to see what trades are made at the upcoming MLB Winter Meetings.
