Widespread ICE raids expected to take place in Boston and major U.S. Cities

After taking office Monday, President Donald Trump signed several executive orders with the intent of making immediate changes that he promised–one of which was to crack down on illegal immigration into the United States.

Starting on Jan. 21, major U.S. cities including Chicago, Miami, and Boston will become massive targets of the ICE organization.

Governor Maura Healey has recently pledged in a speech to work with the incoming U.S. administration to make immigration reforms. This statement surprised Massachusetts residents due to her past issues with Donald Trump and his administration, ultimately suing him around 100 times.

Many Massachusetts cities and towns have already pledged their commitment to not aiding ICE with their deportation efforts. Boston, Sommerville, Cambridge, Concord, Newton, Medford, Natick, and Amherest are amongst the growing list of these towns and cities.

Citizens of Massachusetts and other cities and states are warning each other about these raids through social media platforms under the term “La migra,” meaning migration in Spanish.

Governor Maura Healey also pledged to make it harder for migrants to seek shelter in the state amidst rising homelessness and violence in Massachusetts migrant shelters. Various hotels and other buildings have transformed into migrant shelters in agreement with the Massachusetts government in the past year.

The ICE raids and mass deportations have begun and are expected to continue into the coming weeks as part of Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration initiative.
