By Kelly Egan
Whether you’re a rom-com enthusiast or a die-hard horror fan, “Heart Eyes“ reaches all movie fans this Valentine’s Day. Starring Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding, “Heart Eyes” is the perfect combination of a sappy love story for the hopeless romantics and a gory jumpscare for the thrill-seekers.
Wearing a mask that resembles a twisted adaptation of the heart-eyes emoji, a notorious serial killer has slaughtered dozens of couples each Valentine’s Day in Boston and Philadelphia. Which city will be next?
Allie, played by Holt, is an advertising executive and disbeliever in everything love-related Already on thin ice with her boss, Allie must come up with a showstopping Valentine’s Day jewelry campaign in order to save her job. The company brings in Jay, played by Gooding, who is a dreamy, successful advertiser to help her save the company’s reputation. Unfortunately, the pair did not mesh well at first. Getting off the wrong foot is an understatement.
When the two get mistaken for a couple by the notorious killer, “Heart Eyes” deems them their next target. Will they survive the night and end up falling in love, or will they fall victim to the heart eyes?
The concept of the movie at first glance may seem basic, or what Gen-Z would call “cringy,” but if the directing team was looking to give viewers a fun movie experience, they certainly did their job. The film used classic, overdone horror and romantic comedies to their satirical advantage. While extremely gory at points, the film had the perfect balance of laughs and sappy moments as well as jumpscares and places where you have to cover your eyes.
Heart Eyes will be in theatres nationwide on Tuesday, February 7th. Whether the theatre is full of Valentine’s Day haters or suckers for love, this movie is predicted to be enjoyed by all.
