It takes a lot of preparation and attention to detail to get to the big-ticket game – let alone three times in a row – but head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes understand it will take the entire team to make history.
Questioned about the team’s ability to capitalize on fourth-down opportunities, Mahomes compared it to the win-or-go-home playoff mentality, in which he believes he shines the brightest.
“I think Coach Reid has prepared us for those moments in training camp and throughout the season,” Mahomes said. “He puts us in situations where you have to make those big plays.”
Their 70% success rate in the regular season highlights their confidence in do-or-die situations.
Reid said knowing the team can take a risk is key for this game.
“We have trust in our guys, trust in Patrick, and we trust a game plan,” Reid said. “If we got something there that’s a viable play, we’re going to use it.”
Kansas City is one of the best offensive teams in the National Football League. Converting on fourth-down tries allowed them to continue drives longer than expected, leading to wear and tear on the opposing team’s defense.
Reid’s trust and confidence in his quarterback to take care of the ball and create plays with his arm and legs is why Kansas City is back to the Super Bowl for a third straight year.
